5 · TSILA HASSINE
"Home away from home"

Last winter, I traded Israel’s Mediterranean sun for the white snows
of Zurich, leaving family and friends behind. The Internet made it much
easier to be away from home – chats, online newspapers and webcams
created a temporary, virtual feeling of a home away from home. But when
my homesickness got the better of me, I needed something stronger, something
tangible, something I could actually taste.
In Kreis 5, I found a local heaven. On every street corner, I found some
Falafel takeaway joint. Whenever I entered such a place, I was immediately
transported to my favorite fast food restaurant in Tel Aviv. This time,
however, instead of my Israeli friend, I found a friendly Lebanese behind
the counter… a neighbor, actually, that I never had a chance to
meet, whose homeland I have never visited, could not visit. A stranger-neighbor
who offered a momentary feeling of being at home, away from home.
